Sunrise Smoothie

It's no secret that I like pinterest. In fact, it's become one of my favorite places for recipe inspiration. A while back I found a recipe for a copy-cat Orange Julius. After trying it and tweaking it to my liking, I perfected one of my favorite childhood drinks. You can find my version here.

But, even though that drink satisfies my childhood craving, it's not all that nutritional. I don't know about other moms out there, but if your child is anything like mine, you rarely get a drink or snack all to yourself. Since I end up sharing most everything in my life with my 19 month old, it's better for both of us if it's healthy.

I have since made some changes to the recipe to make it a bit more nutritional. I took out the sugar and added some fresh fruit, but don't worry, it still tastes good!

Here's what you'll need:
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup water
1/4 frozen orange juice concentrate (just slice right through the tube)
1/2 banana - best with brown spots
3 strawberrries
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 tablespoon ground oatmeal (I grind up about a 1/2 cup of oatmeal at a time and keep it in a jar to throw in smoothies)

I don't have a big, fancy blender so I just use my magic bullet and this recipe makes an entire glass full. Enough for me and enough to share with my little one.

Anyway, put everything in a blender and blend until everything is good and combined. Then add some ice. Since I don't have a good blender, I use crushed ice from my freezer to help out my magic bullet. I put in about a 1/4 cup of crushed ice, or as much that will fit!

Then just blend for a bit longer, until you see a little vortex in the middle, pour and enjoy!

  1. this looks so great! I tried that copycat orange julius recipe, too, and it was so sweet I didn't really want to give it to my kids for a snack, it was more like dessert (which I guess is the point). this looks so delicious.

  4. These look really yummy! We've been making blended strawberry milk a lot recently - 1 cup frozen strawberries, 1 cup milk, a tsp vanilla and a tiny bit of sugar if the strawberries are a little tart and blend it up. My kids LOVE it! I bet they'll love your recipe too!
